Srinagar, July 18: Army today foiled two major infiltration bids along the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir killing two militants.
Two militants were killed by Army when a group of militants were attempting to infiltrate into Gurez sector of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district last night.
Sources said that a group of six militants tried to sneak in at around 11:30 pm in Gurez sector of the LoC. Army personnel of 13-Sikh regiment noticed their movement and challenged them. Militants fired at them and Army retaliated leading to a fierce gun battle in which two militants were killed. Three AK-47 rifles and ammunition was recovered during the searches of the area.
The searches are still going on and it is not yet clear whether the rest of the militants of the group have fled or are still hiding in the area.
Srinagar based Defence spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia, said that an infiltration bid was foiled in Gurez sector of North Kashmir today by Army in which two militants were killed. “Three weapons have also been recovered. Operation is in progress,” he said.
Army this evening also foiled an infiltration bid along the LoC in Macchil sector of North Kashmir. Sources said that Army troops deployed at the forward posts in the sector noticed the movement of 5-6 infiltrators near the fence and they were challenged but they fled under the cover of darkness leaving behind some ammunition.
Major search operation has been launched in the area and more troops were rushed to ensure that no militant is hiding in the area.
In the meantime, a 60-year-old civilian who was injured in Army firing at Bijbehara town of Anantnag district yesterday, succumbed today.
Mohammad Abdullah Ganaie was shot in leg and was referred to SKIMS Soura where he succumbed today due to excessive blood loss.
