Traders seek end to curbs in Old City on Fridays

Srinagar, Aug 3: Trade bodies today staged a sit-in protest here in the premises of Jama Masjid at Nowhatta area against the frequent imposition of restrictions in Old City areas on Fridays.
Business community associated with Jama Masjid traders association and Kashmir Traders and Manufactures Federation (KTMF) along with prominent citizens of downtown staged a peaceful sit-in outside Jama Masjid against repeated imposition of curbs in Old City and converting it into a military fortress almost every Friday to disallow congregational Friday prayers in Grand Mosque.
The traders said that curfew and restrictions are “arbitrarily” and frequently imposed by Government at will, thereby caging the entire population of downtown that has seriously cast a shadow on the economy and trade of Old City, which is considered the oldest business hub of Kashmir.
The business community warned the Government against the continous imposition of restrictions and barring of Friday congregational prayers, saying: “if it does not withdraw these repressive measures, protests will be intensified and the entire blame of consequences will lie on the State”.
