Srinagar, Oct 11: Minister for Transport, Sunil Sharma today inaugurated a one day seminar on Road Safety, organized by the Transport Depart-ment in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India. The seminar having expert speakers showcasing best practices from across the country was held at the SKICC.
Skeaking on the occasion, Sunil Sharma reiterated the Government’s resolve to reduce the number of road accidents and deaths by half by 2020 in line with the Brasilia declaration adopted last year by countries across the globe including India. He highlighted the importance of road safety and drew the attention of all the participants to the growing number of road accidents in the State. He reiterated the department’s resolve to make transport safer for commuters. “The Department is coming up with Institute of Drivers’ Training and Research and Inspection and Certification Centers in the State, which will improve quality of training to drivers as well as make fitness tests more stringent.”, he said.
The minister emphasized that the positive changes such as dealer point registration of vehicles, issuance of driving license from IDTRs which are being brought about by the Transport Department will soon be visible to the people.
Commissioner/Secretary, Transport, Hemant Kumar Sharma gave a detailed presentation of the activities of the various wings of the Transport Department.
Transport Commissioner, Saugat Biswas in his welcome address informed that the seminar will cover Government of India Schemes and mandates on Road Safety, Road Engineering and Road Safety Audit, Trauma Care and Best Practices in the field of Accident Research, best practices in e-governance initiatives in road safety.
“While we have expert participation from the MoRTH, GoI, Rajasthan Government, Kerala Government; CIRT, Pune, J&K Government, we have audience participation of educationists, students, doctors, engineers and revenue administrators from every district of Kashmir division”, he added.
Vice Chairman JKSRTC Haji Parvaiz Ahmed; IG Home Guards, Danesh Rana; IG Traffic, Jagjit Kumar; IG Railways Ganai, officers of various departments related to road safety, students/ NGOs/ Volunteers from all districts participated in the seminar.
Experts of national level made presentations on various best practices and benchmarks on the topic. Those included Anuj Malhotra, Traffic Advisor to J&K Govt., Inderjeet Singh, DM/ Collector, Chitorgarh, Rajasthan; Veerendra Singh Rathore, Technical Consultant, MoRTH, GoI; Tanya Pachauri, RRSEAM, Rajasthan; Baniborat Mondal, Road Safety Audit expert; Murtaza Painter form JP Research Institute, Ahmadabad; Shekhar Dhole and Umesh Kumar Suryawanshi from Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) Pune;Dr Tanu Jain, Assistant DG Health, GoI; Vibhor Gupta, Director, Mobi Quel; Abdul Hamid Sheikh, Chief Engineer, PWD, Kashmir; Dr. Saleem Ur Rehman, Director Health Services, Kashmir; Tamouli Ganguly, Consultant, ASRTU, GoI.
