4 drug peddlers arrested

SRINAGAR, Nov 1: Police today said it have arrested four drug peddlers and recovered huge quantity of contraband substances including illicit liquor, cannabis and poppy straw from their possession in south Kashmir’s Kulgam and Anantnag districts.
A police spokesman said acting on specific information, the police laid checkpoints at two different locations including Alstop Qazigund and Qazigund market in Kulgam district.
During checking at Alstop Qazigund, a scooter bearing number JK03E-8802 was intercepted, the spokesman said, adding that on checking, 35 pouches of illicit liquor were recovered from the possession of Tariq Ahmad Bhat. “A case under FIR 292/2017 under Section 48 Excise Act was registered and investigation taken up.
The spokesman said that during checking at Qazigund market, a Tata Sumo bearing registration number JK01M- 6165 was intercepted. “During the search of the vehicle 30 kilograms of poppy straw was recovered from the possession of Ajaz Ahmad Sofi and Gulzar Ahmad Sofi who were boarding the vehicle,” he said.
Meanwhile in Anantnag district, another notorious drug peddler was arrested by police checking at Ashmuqam. During the checking, one person identified as Bilal Ahmad Saqa who was coming from Ashmuqam tried to flee from the spot on seeing the police party, however, the alert and vigilant police on duty chased and apprehended him, the spokesman said.
On search 800 grams of cannabis was recovered from his possession. A case under FIR number 44/2017 under Section 8/20 NDPS Act was registered and investigation was taken up.
