JAMMU, Nov 12: BJP today decided that the party will contest the elections of all four MLC seats under Panchayat quota which will go to polls on December 3.
The decision to this effect was taken in the meeting of its senior leaders, State office bearers, MLAs, District & Morcha presidents held here today under the leadership of State President of the party Shamsher Singh Manhas.
The meeting was specially held to discuss the party’s strategy for the forthcoming election of four MLC seats.
Addressing the meeting, Mr Manhas disclosed that the party has decided to contest all the four seats of the MLCs and the names of the candidates will be finalized and declared by November 15. This was decided by BJP Election Committee in its meeting held earlier in the morning, which was also attended by J&K Seh-Prabhari R.P. Singh, who was on one day visit of Jammu exclusively to take part in the meeting, Manhas added.
He said that the party activists should not think that it is the election of an individual but of the party for whose victory every activist has to work hard. This mantra is the base for the victory, he added.
Manhas said that although it is welcome decision to hold the election of MLCs through Sarpanchs and Panchs but the BJP is of the view that the Panchayats should have been fully empowered by implementing the 73rd Amendment. Till date these elected representatives have been deprived of real powers as a result of which the motive of holding the election to the Panchayats has not served the purpose.
He said that many Sarpanchs and Panchs have been killed, many have resigned as they are receiving continuous threats from militants. There is a sense of insecurity among these elected representatives as the State Government has totally failed to ensure their safety and security, which is a matter of concern.
The district presidents, District Election Incharge and Co-Incharge present in the meeting apprised the State general secretary (Org.) Ashok Koul of the progress made so for in the process of organizational election to the booth and mandal levels in the State. They were asked to complete the election upto Mandal level by November 25, to be followed by the next process.
