NEW DELHI: In a bid to ramp up its local production in India, Sony Pictures Entertainment has tied up with KriArj Entertainment for Akshay Kumar’s ‘Padman’, scheduled to release worldwide on January 26 next year.
Trade sources said the international movie studio will leverage its reach for the global release of the film on January 26, 2018. Directed by R Balki, ‘Padman’ co-stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte.
Taking to twitter to announce the film, superstar Akshay Kumar said,”Happy to have met Sanford Panitch, President,Columbia Pictures, SPE and glad to partner with Sony Pics India as they join on the incredible journey of ‘Padman’ and introduce a real superhero to the world on 26th Jan, 2018,” A comedy-drama film directed and written by R. Balki, ‘Padman’ , which will have megastar Amitabh Bachchan in a special role, is based on Twinkle Khanna’s book, ‘The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad’, which is inspired from the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a Tamil Nadu-based social activist who revolutionised the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkins machine.
In ‘Padman’, Akshay Kumar portrays the real-life social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham, the inventor who risked everything, including his own reputation, to introduce low-cost and easily accessible sanitary napkins to poor women in India and around the world. Akshay Kumar and KriArj Entertainment had earlier tied up for ‘ Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. (AGENCIES)
