JAMMU, Nov 19: Taking a cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative of ‘Clean India’, Indira Colony, in Janipur, under Jammu’s North Sub Division has become Jammu city’s first locality to launch ‘Clean Jammu’ campaign with door- to- door garbage collection on the pattern of Chandigarh city, replacing all the old garbage bins of Jammu Municipal Corporation installed in the area.
These bins had become cause of nuisance for the people of the locality as garbage was often seen scattered on the roads, giving filthy smell and cattle/ cows further aggravating the problem of the people by spreading more dirt around on the road. The people of the nearby areas were also opposing the installation of these bins near their houses and shops due to foul smell.
For getting rid of this menace for ever, some local youth came forward and they raised a Charitable Society with the motivation of former JMC Health Officer, Dr Zaffar (local resident) and launched door- to- door garbage collection campaign by engaging two auto-rickshaws. The society charges just Rs 100 per household per month and garbage is now being picked up door to door from each house.
The people involving local MLA Sat Sharma launched this campaign hardly two weeks back which has been widely appreciated by the locals of the entire locality. The roads and lanes have turned neat and clean and finding this initiative and experiment as most successful, the adjoining Bhawani Nagar locality also adopted the same pattern by engaging another auto-rickshaw hardly two days ago for collecting household garbage. The auto-rickshaw fitted with loud speaker comes daily in each lane and locality during specific time in the morning and collects the household waste in organic and inorganic containers of the load carrier. The people have taken a sigh of relief with this new initiative, first of its kind in Jammu city.
