JAMMU, Nov 21: Dr Rajive Gupta, eminent Laparoscopic Surgeon of Jammu, successfully performed two major operations in the same sitting at Maxx Lyfe Hospital, near Bathindi Morh, Jammu.
A woman namely Deep Jawala (30), wife of Ranjeet Singh, resident of Ramban, was suffering from severe pain abdomen due to gall bladder stones and non-functioning of right kidney due to a big stone in the right ureter.
The patient was moving from General Surgeons to Urologists for her treatment. Surgeons were advising removal of Gall Bladder by one operation and Urologists were advising separate surgery for the removal of diseased and non-functioning kidney. Finally, patient landed at Maxx Lyfe Hospital and consulted Laparoscopic Surgeon, Dr Rajive Gupta, who took the challenge and successfully performed both the operations laparoscopically in one go by making just three punctures on the abdomen.
The dual operation took 2 hours and 45 minutes and Gall bladder containing multiple stones was removed along with the non- functioning right kidney and its ureter by extending one of the puncture to 1.5 cm incision, which was later utilized for putting drain pipe that is mandatory in such a case and the other two punctures did not require stitches.
The operation was assisted by Dr Ritvik and OT Assistant Yoginder and General Anesthesia was administered by the senior Anesthetist, Dr Rakesh Anand. The patient was made to sit three hours after the operation and given liquid feed after eight hours and was discharged after 24 hours in an excellent condition with the instructions to resume routine activities in 2-3 days.
According to Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr Dushyant Choudhary, this type of double major surgery by the laparoscopic technique has not been performed even at Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu where lot of equipment and faculty are available and is probably first of its kinds in the country.
