NEW DELHI: The Union Government is working on a Data Protection Law on cyber security and privacy issue, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad told the Rajya Sabha during the Question Hour on Friday.
He also assured members that he will get to the bottom of how Facebook asked for Aadhar number of a new person seeking to become a member. “I am inquiring into it and I will revert to the House,” he told AITC member Derek O’Brien who had asked a supplementary on this. Mr Prasad, however, avoided in the Rajya Sabha a direct reply to whether it proposes to make internet availability a fundamental right under the Constitution, instead it said it was committed to providing internet connectivity without discrimination.
Replying to a question from Janata Dal (United) member Harivansh, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad said the priority of the government was to provide internet accessibility in the country without any discrimination.
When nominated member K T S Tulsi said the United Nations had made internet availability a human right, Mr Prasad reiterated that the Government was making efforts to make internet available to people without discrimination.
Efforts are on to connect all gram panchayats so that a person in rural India is not at a disadvantage to a person in urban India. The government’s Digital India programme and services envisions transforming India into a digitally empowered society by connecting through broadband highways, universal access to mobile connectivity and public internet.
