GUWAHATI, Dec 4: Stylish middle-order batsman Paras Sharma slammed a brilliant century and helped Jammu and Kashmir to manage a draw against Assam in the Under-19 boys Cooch Behar Trophy at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, here today.
After conceding a lead of 143 runs to Assam in the first innings, J&K were struggling at 4/3 when Zaid and Paras Sharma consolidated the innings to take the score to 33 runs before stumps were drawn yesterday.
Resuming from an overnight score of 33/3, the brave duo showed character and application to play full morning session to help their team from further damage. Paras was brilliant throughout the innings and played 319 balls in his unbeaten knock of 143 runs, with the help of 16 delectable boundaries. His innings was an amalgamation of all the shots in the book and struck all the shots with elegance. Zaid, on the hand, lost his wicket at his individual score of 41 runs, but not before taking his team out of the danger zone. He hit 4 fours in his knock of 183 balls. Then it was the turn of Abhinav Puri, who scored 33 off 104 balls in the first innings and showed application and grit in the second innings in his 60-ball knock of 8 runs, to help J&K salvage a draw. J&K had scored 206/4 when the umpires called off the play as both captains agreed for not bowling the mandatory overs. For Assam, Amlan Jyoti Baruah was pick of the bowlers, who captured 3 wickets, while Biku Burgohain claimed one.
The J&K team is being accompanied by Niaz Khan as manager, former Ranji trophy player and BCCI Level-A coaches Rajan Singh slathia and Manzoor Dar as joint manager and coach respectively, while Pankaj Dutt and Rahul Razdan are accompanying the team as trainer and physio respectively.
