IMPHAL (MANIPUR), Mar 16: In a rare occasion of its kind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in one go, simultaneously launched more than Rs. 700 crore worth of projects for the State of Manipur, here today. This also turned out to be a rare gift for the BJP-led Government in the State, which began its second year in office today.
Present on the occasion were Governor of Manipur Najma Heptulla, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Union Minister for development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh, Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Khemchand, Deputy Speaker and Ministers in the State Council of Ministers.
Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the prestigious National University of Sports, which he had announced soon after he took over as Prime Minister in 2014. This was in keeping with the fact that most of the medals in Olympics and other international athletic events are fetched by Manipur and surrounding States, but there is no quality-institution available for a formal training in the region.
The other projects launched by Modi today included 1000 Anganwadi Centres, 19 residential complexes for teachers, doctors and nurses, 25 Sadbhawana Mandaps, upgradation of Koirengey-Spikmai road and Cave Tourism project at Khangkhul.
Prime Minister also inaugurated the Rani Gaidinliu Park, Nu-Te Bazar Women Market at Churachandpur and Scheduled Tribe Girls’ Hostel.
Addressing a public meeting after launching these projects, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, when he last came to Manipur in February 2017, he had committed that if the people of the State choose to go in for a change of government, the new government will accomplish within 15 months all that the earlier government had failed to achieve in 15 years. He said, the results are already there for everybody to see, although the new government in the State, still has three more months to go before it completes 15 months in office.
Modi reiterated that all the eight States of Northeast will be given full support by the Centre to ensure equitable development, at par with the other States of India.
Speaking to media persons later, Dr Jitendra Singh lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Northeast thrust” and recalled that there was a time when a Union Minister’s visit to Northeast was a very rare event, but today Prime Minister Modi is a household name in the region and the officials of the DoNER Ministry are directly in touch with the local representatives.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi also addressed the inaugural session of the prestigious 105th Indian Science Congress Meet, which is being held for the first time in the State of Manipur.
