Churchill Brothers, Jammu United Club sail into semis

Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Dec 6: After PDDC (A), Churchill Brothers and Jammu United Club thrashed their opponents in their respective quarterfinal matches and registered their names in the semis of the ongoing Christmas Soccer Tournament, being organized by Christian Sports Organization (CSO) in collaboration with J&K Police Department, Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA) and J&K Sports Council at GGM Science College Football ground here today. Earlier, in the quarterfinal match, Churchill Brothers thrashed Mussa Club in a one sided affair match by five goals to zero (5-0). Three goals were scored by Rahul of Churchill Brothers, while, one goal each was netted by Moon Stephan and Binny. The opponent team ‘Mussa Club’ failed to score even a single goal and lost the match by 5-0 goals. In the second quarterfinal match, Jammu United Club outplayed Vijay Club by a solitary goal and paved way for the semifinal round of the tournament. In the first half of the match, Rahul Sharma of Jammu United Club netted the goal in the 20th minute, which the opponent team failed to equalize and the first half ended with 1-0 goals. In the second half, players of Vijay Club tried their level best to clinch the match but could not and thus lost the match by 1-0 goals. The matches were officiated by Clint Mattoo, Rinku Gill, Moon Stephan, Rajesh Sumbaria, Saudhar Mattoo, Harmanjeet Singh, Roheny, Elijah Sotra and Harbans Lal. On the occasion, Narinder Gupta, secretary Pradesh Congress Committee was the chief guest in the first match, whereas, Manmohan Choudhary, Former Mayor was the chief guest in the second match. Manmohan Choudhary also announced cash prize of Rs 10,000 for the winner of the tournament. Anurag Khalnani, Director of Bhaichung Bhuttia Football School, New Delhi, who was the special guest in today’s matches said that Jammu footballers are very enthusiastic and have potential to play for big teams and will bring laurels for J&K. He further disclosed that they are going to establish a Bhaichung Bhuttia Football Academy at Jammu and the youngones from 8 years of age will be imparted training under experts of the game and these young footballers will also get chance to play matches with the other States of the country. Among others present were Rajesh Gill, president, CSO, Surinder Singh Bunty, Resident Secretary, JKFA, Majid Kakroo Former Indian Captain, Rakesh, David Mattoo, Asif Gill, coach Satpaul, Victor Sotra, William Mattoo, Sam Paul, Nitu and Roman Sandhu. In tomorrow fixture, Churchill Brothers will clash with PDDC (A) in the first semifinal match of the tournament at the same venue.
