KATHUA, Mar 27: After Nowshera, Mendhar and Kalakote the demand for grant of district status to Basholi is also gaining momentum.
To highlight the demand the lawyers of Basholi took out a procession in the town today demanding grant of district status to Basholi which is the ancient town of the Jammu and famous for its cultural heritage.
The procession was led by Advocate Kartar Chand. It later submitted a memorandum to Additional DC Basholi, Sanjay Gupta. While justifying the demand the memorandum said that Basholi being one of the ancient towns of the Jammu region is famous for its cultural heritage and ancient art and handicrafts. But unfortunately it has been ignored while granting the district status to various towns of the State earlier.
Terming it a great discrimination with Basholi they said that the people living in far of areas of Kathua district like Chattargala which is about 650 kms away from Kathua district headquarter and the people from other farthest areas of Bani and Billawar have to travel a long distance in reaching Kathua. Justifying the demand the lawyers said the problems of the people living in far-flung areas of Bani, Basholi and Billawar like Lohi Malhar, Sarthal etc will be eased if Basholi is given the district status.
