National Med Comm Bill disastrous: Karan Singh

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Mar 28: Former Union Health Minister and veteran All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader Dr Karan Singh today said that passage of National Medical Commission Bill would be disastrous for the country.
In a press statement issued here today, Dr Singh strongly opposed the proposed Bill and said that he was deeply disturbed by National Medical Commission Bill. Dr Singh said its passage would be a major disaster as it may dilute the whole structure of our Medical Education which has served us so well for many decades in India and around the world.
“In my view Ayush, Homeopathy and other medical systems must be developed in their own right, but should not over lap with the well established allopathic system. It is possible to utilize more than one system to treat patients, which is often done , but any attempt to develop a second rung of Allopathic doctors through a crash course  is unacceptable,” Dr Singh maintained.
The AICC leader further said that under the present system, getting an MD  degree in any specialisation requires many years  and sustained hard work; first for the MBBS degree  and then MD and thereafter research. There can be no short cuts in this process.  Dr Singh strongly  urged upon the Union Health Ministry to withdraw the proposed Bill from the Parliament without delay.
