JAMMU, Apr 6: Veterinary Scientists Association of SKUAST-Jammu has appealed State Government for early establishment of Veterinary and Fisheries University in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Association has observed that the establishment of separate Veterinary University in each State is in accordance with the recommendation of previous five year plan of Government of India. In accordance with the GoI, guidelines, the State Government has also envisaged the programme to establish a separate Veterinary University in the State which will cater exclusively to livestock and fisheries sector, which stand neglected so far under the present Agricultural University setup, said the Association members in a meeting, held, here today.
They further said that the development of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has been negligible over the last two decades under the Agricultural Universities set up in the State of J&K. The development if at all, has been lop-sided with agriculture taking the major share and neglect of Veterinary Sciences in almost all the spheres, be it infrastructure development, budget allotment, or human resource improvement, they alleged and added that this has been going on despite the fact that the revenue generated by the university has been mainly from the Veterinary Sciences and the budget allotted by State Government in lieu has virtually been used in all activities related to agriculture only.
The Association reiterated that the establishment of the Veterinary University in Jammu will provide quality education in Veterinary, Animal, Dairy, Poultry, Meat, Wild Life, and Allied Sciences. The Veterinary University will not only conduct research in Veterinary/ Animal Husbandry and allied sectors but will also strive to improve service delivery of professionals of the university and field departments, provide extension services like, training, consultancy, and project formulation to the farmers, unemployed-youth and entrepreneurs, the members said.
“It will develop varying business models of entrepreneurship, and develop public private partnership in managing Government and organized farms and to incorporate bio-technology and information and communication technology in livestock enterprises. The university will also set up linkages with other Veterinary Institutions, within and outside the country for research and development,” they added and pointed out that many Indian States have already de-linked the Veterinary and Animal Sciences institutions from the State Agricultural Universities
