Portion of Assembly building collapses, Govt orders probe

JAMMU, Dec 11: A portion of historic Legislative Assembly building collapsed on the intervening night of December 10 and 11 prompting the Government to constitute a committee to ascertain the causes behind the incident.
Official sources said that on the intervening night of December 10 and 11, a portion of the historic Legislative Assembly building housing rooms of the Chief Minister, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Press Gallery caved in at around 2:30 am.
As soon as damage to the historic building came to fore this morning, a team of senior officers visited the spot to ascertain the intensity of damage. Taking serious note of the damage to historic building, the Government immediately ordered an enquiry to ascertain whether precautionary measures were taken while carrying out work on new complex.
The enquiry would be conducted by three-member committee comprising Chief Engineer, R&B, Tehsin Mustafa, PMGSY Chief Engineer, D L Sharma and Managing Director, Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC), M M Gupta.
On the directions of the Government, M/s CES Company, which has prepared design of the upcoming complex, has deputed its officers to ascertain how the historic building suffered damage, sources said, adding “when the design of the upcoming building was being prepared by the company clear directions were issued to ensure that existing historic complex doesn’t suffer any damage”.
When contacted, Minister of State for R&B, Javed Ahmed Dar confirmed that a three-member committee has been constituted to ascertain how the historic building suffered damage. “We will have to take immediate protective measures as the possibility of more portion suffering damage during rains cannot be ruled out”, he added.
Meanwhile, Public Undertakings Committee (PUC) of Legislative Assembly, in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Abdul Majid Wani, MLA Doda, took serious note of the collapse of existing Assembly building and directed the Managing Director of JKPCC to furnish detailed status report on the project for scrutiny of Committee members within a week’s time.
