NEW DELHI, May 3: Union Capital New Delhi is all set to have a state-of-the-art Northeast Convention-cum-Cultural Centre at the prime location of Sector 13, Dwarka. The Ministry of Northeast (DoNER) has officially handed over the construction work to CPWD at a piece of land measuring approximately 1.5 acre, which was acquired by it last year.
This was disclosed here today by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh while briefing the media after convening a joint meeting of the Ministry of DoNER and the North-Eastern Council (NEC). The meeting was attended by Secretary DoNER, Naveen Verma along senior officials of the Ministry, while the NEC Secretary Ram Muivah and his team had traveled down from Shillong for the meeting.
The new and the first-of-its-kind Northeast Convention-cum-Cultural Centre is, to an extent, inspired by the idea of the iconic India International Centre (IIC) in the union capital.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, the new complex will be comprehensive and would include a convention hall, auditorium, guest house, library, food court, sale outlets and other contemporary provisions. It will mark the symbolic and perpetual presence of Northeast in New Delhi, he said. The convention centre will be devoted to the people of Northeast as well as those with a special interest in the North Eastern region, he added.
Dr Jitendra Singh also referred to a piece of land acquired by Ministry of DoNER in Rohini, another posh locality in union capital, with the specific purpose of constructing a hostel for Northeast students. This will be in addition to the Northeast Students Hostel under construction by the North Eastern Council in the premises of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, he said. Meanwhile, he informed that a Northeast Students Hostel, for which the foundation stone was laid in the campus of the Bangalore University in 2016, is also progressing fast in construction.
During the meeting, deliberations were also carried out over the North East Road Sector Development Scheme (NERSDS), an exclusive Road Corporation, possibly the first-of-its-kind, approved by the Government of India to focus on road constructions in any one particular region of the country. This road development scheme will particularly focus on construction and maintenance of the so called ‘orphan roads’ inter-inking the two neighboring States, which were often found to be neglected.
Also discussed in the meeting was the recent order from Union Cabinet, providing for 100% funding of Central Government schemes and works in Northeast. The delegation of revised authorization to NEC and new guidelines were also deliberated upon.
