JAMMU, June 2: The 2nd group of Tawi Trekkers J&K comprising of 41 students, including 23 girls of Shangrilla Public School, Jammu left today for Mongri under the supervision of Shashi Kant Sharma, a trained mountaineer, to participate in the J&K Himalayan Trekking Programme, being organized by the club in the sylvan surroundings of beautiful Moungri hills in Udhampur district.
Two teachers of the school Ranjana Gandotra and Vandana Manhas also accompanied the group of trekkers whose average age is 13 years.
The group was flagged off by Surestha Khajuria, Principal of Shangrilla Public school in the presence of Ram Khajuria, President; Shawetica Khajuria, General Secretary and Sonam Sidharth, Joint Secretary of Tawi Trekkers J&K.
It is worth mentioning here that Himalayan Trekking Programme was started by the club in 1990 for school students in order to ‘catch them young”.
The programme has been very popular among students and during the last 28 years, over 12000 boys and girls have participated in this activity.
This year, the programme is being organised in cooperation with Directorate of Tourism, Jammu, J&K Police, J&K State Sports Council, Mountaineering Association of J&K and Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee, New Delhi.
