JAMMU, Dec 18: J&K Pradesh Congress Committee delegation met Union Defence Minister AK Antony and All India Congress Committee (AICC) Chief Sonia Gandhi at New Delhi.
Led by Member Parliament (MP) Madan Lal Sharma, former Minister Manjit Singh, Vice Chairman of Gujjar Bakerwal Advisory Board and Vice Chairman of OBC Kuldeep Verma presented memorandum to Sonia Gandhi and AK Antony.
The delegation urged the Defence Minister to grant adequate crop compensation to the farmers as their lives have become miserable due to the non cultivation of the land, enhancement in compensation and rent for the land coming under ditch-com-bandh constructed by Army in 1965, special recruitment drives in Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch districts, while the age, qualification, height relaxation should also be given to the youth belonging to the border areas.
Regarding the refugee’s issues, Refugee and senior Congress leader Manjit Singh appealed for the one time settlement of the refugees of 1965, 1971, 1947 and West Pak refugees.
Manjit Singh expressed concern over J&K Government’s delaying policy for the settlement of refugees, as they have not responded with the report to the Government of India despite directions.
The deputation also demanded construction of fourth bridge on Chenab river for the smooth flow of traffic, while the road from Jammu to Poonch should also be made four lane.
They also demanded special recruitment for the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and minority communities.
Meanwhile, Bashir Naaz demanded construction of rail line from Jammu to Poonch, inclusion of Gojri language in the eighth schedule and raising of Gujjar Regiment in the Army.
Kuldeep Verma demanded that the reservation quota of OBC people in J&K should be increased from its present percentage.
