Court awards 15 yrs RI under NDPSA, Arms Act

JAMMU, Dec 28: Principal Sessions Judge Kathua, M K Hanjura today awarded 15 years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 1 lakh to Harpaul Singh alias Balochi, son of Puran Singh of Kathua in NDPSA and Arms Act.
According to the police case, on June 8, 2007 police conducted search in the house of accused and recovered a gun (315 bore) along with 26 live and two empty cartridges, 12 bore gun along with 14 live and 11 empty cartridges, one pistol along with 7 live and 6 empty cartridges besides poppy straw weighing 261 kilograms. After completion of investigation challan was presented in the court.
After hearing Advocate K B Mahajan for the accused whereas Public Prosecutor Ravi Kumar for the State, Principal Sessions Judge observed, “the consequences of the narcotics on the human health are disastrous and can cause death. The fungus of narcotics has engulfed our country. It has a cancerous growth. It will spread its tentacles all around and a day will come when major chunk of Indian population, particularly younger ones, will suffer”.
“It is an aggravating factor that has to be borne in mind”, the Court said and awarded 10 years RI and fine of Rs 1 lakh under Section 22 of NDPS Act and five years RI and fine of Rs 5000 under 25 Arms Act.
