LEH, Aug 27: Remembering the supreme sacrifices made by Nawang Rinchen of Sankar village, Tsering Stobdan of Durbuk and Tsewang Dorjey of Saboo popularly known as ‘Nawang, Dorjay’ and ‘Stobdan’ on their 29th death anniversary, the leaders of Leh again reiterated their united stand on the demand of ‘Union Territory with Legislature’ for Leh.
Nawang, Dorjay and Stobdan laid down their lives on 27th August 1989 while fighting for UT demands agitation launched by the people of Leh District.
LAHDC Chairman Dorjay Mutup, Executive Councillors, MP Thupstan Chhewan, MLA Nawang Rigzin Jora, MLC Chering Dorjay, LBA Vice Presidents Rinchen Namgyal and PT Kunzang, Anjuman Imamiya Vice President Haji Mehboob Ali, Gonpa Association President Shatup Chamba, LBA Women Wing President Rinchen Angmo, LBA Youth Wing President Konchok Ishey Stak, Councillors, LBA GCM members, family members of martyrs, students and public paid rich tributes to the martyrs at their memorial Stupa today.
The leaders offered Khataks at the portraits of the martyrs at the martyrs’ memorial Stupa at martyrs’ memorial Skyatsaks, Leh. Tributes were also paid to Lobzang Tsondus of Likir and Tashi Angchuk of Saspol who lost their lives on 24th January 1981 during an agitation launched to demand Schedule Tribe (ST) status to Ladakhis. Monks from Lingshed Monastery recited special prayer.
Remembering the martyrs today the leaders reiterated that they may differ on their political agenda affiliating to different political parties but when its comes to Ladakh causes all will stand united to demand for UT Status with legislature to Leh. They also made it clear that whether Kargil District support Leh District for UT or not Leh will fight alone for UT.
Regarding the allotment of land in favor of the families of the martyrs, CEC Dorjay Mutup assured to process it at the earliest.
MP Thupstan Chhewang recounted how Ladakhi people stood in unity for UT demand during 1989 agitation. MP Ladakh admitted that Article 370 is an obstacle for creating UT.
MLC Chering Dorjay and LBA Vice President PT Kunzang also expressed their views.
A photo exhibition from 1989 agitation and other historic movements launched from time to time demanding UT for Ladakh were also displayed. All the business establishments remained closed till afternoon as a mark of respect to the martyrs.
