JAMMU, Jan 11: Government Degree College (GDC) Mendhar defeated Government College of Engineering and Technology (JCET), Jammu by 4 wickets to enter the semifinals, while a superb hat-trick by medium pacer Vikas Sharma put formidable side of SPMR Commerce College on to the back-foot to outplay them in a close contest by 7 runs in the ongoing Inter-Collegiate Men’s Cricket Tournament, being organized by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu at Varsity grounds, here.
In the first match played today, batting first, GCET scored 133 runs in the stipulated 20 overs by losing 8 wickets. Farhan was the top scorer with 36 runs, studded with 4 boundaries, while Anoop Thakur contributed 25 runs with 3 boundaries and 1 six. Rahul and Nitin Manhas also chipped in with 19 and 11 runs respectively. For GDC Mendhar, Irfan was the pick of the bowlers, who claimed 3 wickets by conceding 27 runs in his 4 overs, while Saddam Hussain and Iftikar Ali claimed one wicket each.
GDC Mendhar, in reply scored the required runs in 19.4 overs in a close contest by losing 6 wickets, thus won the match by 4 wickets. Motein Khan slammed a brilliant half-century (51 runs), with the help of 3 fours and one six, while Saddam Hussain and Agraz Khan scored 28 and 21 runs to the total respectively. For GCET, Vishal Pandita captured 3 important wickets by giving away 24 runs in his 4 overs, while Kuldeep Thakur and Anoop Thakur picked one wicket each.
The match was officiated by Sudhir Singh and Vijay Dogra as umpires, while Manu Khajuria acted as the scorer.
In another match, GDC Poonch scripted a thrilling win by 7 runs over Commerce College to advance in the tournament. Batting first, GDC Poonch scored 132 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Asad-ur-Rehman and Gurjinder Singh contributed 36 runs each. Rehman hit 4 fours and 1 six in his brief knock, while Gurjinder struck 2 sixes and 2 fours in his innings. Nandan chipped in with 18 runs. For Commerce College, Prashant, Ravi Kumar, Pankaj and Shub Karan claimed one wicket apiece.
Commerce College, in reply, fell short of just 7 runs as Vikas Sharma took a brilliant hat-trick when the match was almost equally poised to tilt it in his side’s favour. Vikrant scored brisk 29 runs with 3 sixes and one four, Shubkaran contributed 24 runs, while Amit Rathi chipped in with 16 runs. Vikas Sharma and Yasir scalped 3 wickets each for GDC Poonch, while Asad-ur-Rehman took 2 and Jasvinder one.
