SHO attached, 3 cops suspended

Srinagar, Jan 21: Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, Jehangir Mir, today ordered Magisterial inquiry and suspended 3 policemen and attached the Station House Officer (SHO) Kulgam in South Kashmir for nocturnal police raid on a house where family alleged harassment.
An official spokesman said here that acting on the direction of Deputy Commissioner, Jahangir Mir, Superintendent of Police today placed 3 police officials under suspension besides attaching SHO police station Kulgam for alleged excesses in a raid carried out during the intervening night of January 19 and 20 at Larno village here. An SPO has also been disengaged in this connection.
The administrative action was taken as the people of Larno village continued their protest for the second day today. The protesters blocked the Anantnag-Kulgam road and were demanding action against the police men responsible for the nocturnal raid and harassment.
The Deputy Commissioner today visited the village and the house where the incident took place to take stock of the situation. The police had raided the house to effect the arrest of family members in connection with an FIR lodged against them.
The DC also ordered probe by Additional District Development Commissioner M Y Zargar, into the raid and alleged harassment. He has been directed to furnish factual report within a fortnight.
It may be mentioned here that protests broke out in South Kashmir’s Laroo village as people took to the streets against harassment of a family at the hands of police.
Protesters alleged that the police team picked up four male and two female members of the family on Saturday night, without any female cops accompanying them.
They alleged that policemen also beat up the family members including two girls before taking them to a nearby camp last night. Villagers said that the matter was sub judice and policemen acted beyond their jurisdiction.
The local MLA M Y Tarigami while condemning the alleged police harassment had demanded Magisterial inquiry into the incident.
