Viswaroopam case: HC advises Kamal to explore amicable solution

CHENNAI, Jan 26:
The Madras High Court will pass orders tomorrow on Kamal Hassan’s controversial film ‘Viswaroopam’ which was banned from screening in theatres following protests from some Muslim outifts alleging that the film portrayed them in poor light.
When the petition filed by Rajkamal Films International, the production house of the actor challenging the two-week ban imposed by the Tamil Nadu Government came up for hearing, Mr Justice K Venkataraman, who had viewed the film during a special screening on January 26 said, he would pass the orders tomorrow.
While adjourning the matter to tomorrow, the Judge also advised Kamal Hassan to hold talks with the government officials and resolve the issue amicably.
Contending that the country’s unity was paramount, the Judge asked the actor to explore an amicable settlement by holding talks with the government officials in the wake of the ban.
Meanwhile, the actor, who arrived here from US this morning, filed yet another petition before the High Court seeking a direction to the government to revoke the orders issued to all the District Collectors to ban the film.
Sources said Kamal Hassan’s next step in the episode was that he might meet the government officials and also the representatives of the Muslim outfits, which had been opposing the film, to sort out the issue.
Citing law and order problems, the Tamil Nadu Government had imposed a two-week ban on the film two days before its scheduled release in theatres on January 25 following protests by Muslim organisations.
The Rajkamal Films International and Kamal’s brother S Chandrahasan had filed a writ petition before the Madras High Court challenging the ban and prayed for an interim stay.
When the petition came up before Mr Justice Venkataraman on January 24, the Judge refused to pass any interim orders and said he would view the film and decide on the merits of the government’s order imposing a ban on the film and adjourned the matter to today.
Following, this the special screening was organised on the Republic Day at a private lab when the Judge, along with the counsels from both sides and representatives of some Muslim outfits, viewed the film.
The much-awaited film, which has hit several roadblocks, had not hit the screens in Tamil Nadu as scheduled on January 25.
Though the film was banned in some states and abroad, it had hit the theatres in some other states and also in some countries. (UNI)
