JAMMU, Dec 17: Grand Master (GM) Aravindh Chithambaram defeated one of the overnight leaders GM Vaibhav Suri to jointly lead with International Master (IM) Stany with 8.5 points each in the ongoing Senior National Open Chess Championship, being played at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, here today.
Five players GM Karthikeyan Murali, GM Vaibhav Suri, GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, GM Bakre Tejas and IM Krishna are on the third spot with 8 points each at the end of 11th round.
GM Aravindh Chithmbaram of Tamil Nadu beat GM Vaibhav Suri of PSPB, GM Deepan Chakkravarthy of RSPB drew with IM Stany of AAI, IM Krishna of RSPB drew with GM Bakre Tejas of Air India, GM Swapnil S Dhopade of RSPB lost to GM Karthikeyan Murali of PSPB, IM Vignesh of Tamil Nadu drew with GM Sengupta Deep of PSPB, GM Chanda Sandipan of West Bengal drew with IM Nitin of RSPB, IM Akash of Tamil Nadu drew with GM Vishnu Prasanna of Tamil Nadu, GM Anurag Mhamal of Goa drew with IM Shyaamnikhil of RSPB, Srijit Paul of West Bengal drew with GM Neelotpal Das of PSPB, IM Rathnakaran of RSPB lost to GM Venkatesh of PSPB, GM Karthik Venkataraman beat Raahul of Tamil Nadu, IM Girinath of RSPB drew with IM Rajesh of Tamil Nadu, Prasanna of Tamil Nadu lost to GM Pravin Thipsay of Maharashtra, Harshavardhan of Tamil Nadu drew with IM Viani Antonio Dcunha of Karnataka, IM Satyapragyan Swayangsu of Air India beat Sankalp Gupta of Maharashtra, IM Sharma Dinesh of LIC drew with GM Gupta Abhijeet of PSPB, FM Nitish Belurkar of Goa lost to GM Sundararajan Kidambi of Tamil Nadu, FM Wagh Suyog of Maharashtra drew with IM Swayams Mishra of Air India, FM Navalgund Niranjan of Karnataka beat GM Laxman of RSPB and IM Gusain Himal of RSPB beat IM Konguvel Ponnuswamy of PSPB.
5 Players achieved norms on conclusion of 10 rounds namely GA Stany Grand Master norm and Srijit Paul, Navalgund Niranjan, Ritviz Parab and Harshvardhan IM norms.
AJKCA President Atul Kumar Gupta who is also Chairman Organizing Committee informed that final of this historic National Championship organized by All J&K Chess Association under the aegis of All India Chess Federation will be played tomorrow.
Around 160 players including 19 Grand Masters and 20 International Masters and some Arjuna Awardee players from 27 States and 8 special units—Air India, Railways, Defence, Petroleum Sports Promotion Board, LIC, etc. are participating in this event. Total 50 titled players are also playing in this historical and strongest ever national of India till date.
This is also a Asian Zonal 3.7 event as India is a separate zone in Asia. Top 10 board games were shown live on internet by expert Ganesh Babu of Tamil Nadu. Total prizes of Rs 20 lakhs will be distributed among top 10 players and first prize being Rs 5 lakh.
All the matches are played under the overall supervision of All J&K Chess Association President Atul Kumar Gupta.
International Arbiter Dharmendra Kumar is Chief Arbiter of this event who is supported by 7 other Arbiters.
From J&K, Soham Kamotra is at 5.5 points. Other J&K players, who are participating in this event are Sumit Grover, Khalid Amin, SP Sharma, Ajit Singh, Ashutosh Jamwal, Surinder and Ankush Bhardwaj. J&K players got very high level exposure by participating in this historic and strongest event of India.
All J&K Chess Association members present in today matches include AR Wani, Ashiq Ahmad Kolu, Baldev Raj, Taranvir Singh, Kuljeet Jamwal, Farooq Ahmad, Mohammad Shafi, Khalid Amin, Raj Kumar, Vikas Nanda, Rakesh Gupta and Mohit Bharti.
