Need to encourage medal winning sports disciplines: Waqar

JAMMU, Feb 1: Minister of State for Power, Waqar Rasool inaugurated the 3-day State Wushu Championship in an impressive, colourful and well attended function at Indoor Complex, MA Stadium, here today.
Over 600 players drawn from 18 districts of the State are participating in this mega event, which will conclude on February 2 at the same venue. The participating districts include, Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Udhampur, Reasi, Kishtwar, Srinagar, Budgam, Ananatnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal,
While speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the time is ripe to encourage medal winning sports disciplines in the State and enhance the standard of priority games, wushu being one of them.
Witnessing a huge participation of players, the Minister said that it is amazing to see such big number of players participating in a State level event, adding that more and more events like this will go a long way in promoting sports and games in the State.
IGP, Dilbag Singh also spoke on the occasion and lauded the efforts of the organizers in holding this sporting extravaganza.
Earlier, HK Lohia, chairman Wushu Association of Jammu and Kashmir presented welcome address and gave brief report of the activities organized by the Association during the year.
The vote of thanks was presented by Kuldeep Handoo, general secretary Wushu Association of J&K.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Vijay Saraf, vice president Wushu Association of J&K, Ranjeet Kalra, vice president Wushu Association of J&K, Deepak Handa, Director Handa College of Education, Rajiv Khajuria, Nisar and Rouf-ul-Hassan, president Non-Gazetted Employees of J&K.
