JAMMU, Feb 3: Dr Vivak M Arya, Assistant Professor of SKUAST-Jammu, got best oral presentation award in a three-day National Conference on “Farmers’ Friendly Soil and Water Conservation Technologies for Mitigating Climate Change Impact”.
The conference was jointly organized by Soil Conservation Society of India (SCSI) New Delhi & ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation Regional Centre, Ooty. The award was presented by Dr K Alagusundaram, DDG, Agricultural Engineering, ICAR, New Delhi.
Prof (Dr) N Kumar, Vice Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was the chief guest of the valedictory function. Eminent scientists from across the country attended the function including Prof (Dr) V Parveen Rao, Vice-chancellor of Professor Jayashanker Telangana State Agricultural University, Prof (Dr) Suraj Bhan, President, Soil Conservation Society of India, Dr Sanjay Arora, Vice President, Soil Conservation Society of India, New Delhi, Prof (Dr) Vikas Sharma, HoD, Soil Science, SKUAST-J and Dr Manmohanjit Singh, Director, PAU.
The conference was aimed at developing an interface among academicians, researchers, Government departments, policy makers, farmers, industry and other stakeholders to prepare the roadmap for developing farmer’s friendly soil and water conservation technologies for mitigating climate change impact on soil and water resources.
The research paper authored by Dr Arya, Dr Vikas Sharma, Dr KR Sharma and Ajay Thakur entitled “Effect of conservation modules on SQI in rain-fed orchards of Jammu Zone” studied the effect of soil conservation modules on SQI in rain-fed orchards of Jammu zone and discussed about the importance of conservation agriculture practices especially in context of changing climate and for maintaining soil quality.
The paper gave solution to the issues pertaining to the extreme weather events and changing pattern of horticulture and agriculture in the State. The paper examines the ecological and economic costs and benefits, as well as the climatic adaptation of conservation practices in Shivaliks.
