NEW DELHI, Feb 21: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh said here today that the unique feature of the social reforms introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the last five years is that these inspire mass participation and were instantly owned up by the common man, thus turning them into mass movements.
Addressing the launch of “Shisht Bharat” campaign here today, Dr Jitendra Singh said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi enjoys such a high level of trustworthiness and credibility among the masses that whenever he gives a call for a social reform, it is instantly taken up by the people as their own cause. This is a phenomenon, he said, which was never seen in the history of independent India, when most of the mass campaigns were started by the people and the Government of the day was compelled to recognize the people’s point of view.
Citing example of the “Swachch Bharat Abhiyan”, Dr Jitendra Singh said, Prime Minister Modi made an unorthodox appeal for cleanliness, from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the Independence Day, instead of indulging in any lofty discourses. But the simplicity, sincerity and honesty of this appeal had such a countrywide and deep impact that within a few months, it assumed the form of a household movement and lakhs of female toilets got constructed in the schools within the first year itself.
Addressing the children and youth on the occasion, Dr Jitendra Singh said, awareness or education about the social norms cannot be imparted to youngsters only through sermonizing, but it is the elders who themselves need to follow these norms and high standards of conduct, which the youngsters then feel inspired to emulate spontaneously on their own. He said, the current generation of youth has very high self-confidence and self-esteem as compared to earlier generations because they are globally connected, well-informed and their capabilities are now acknowledged across the world, without any prejudices which were faced by the earlier generations of youth.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, India is an evolving democracy and the evolution has to happen at all levels. He spoke about several of India’s achievements in the recent years, which have enabled its people to overcome the complexes of the past and emerge as a formidable force for the rest of the world to recognize.
During the event, prizes for essay competition and panel discussion were also distributed by the Minister.
