Karat dismisses Rahul’s take on Left becoming irrelevant

LUCKNOW, Feb 13:
CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat today discarded the statement of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi saying Left has become ‘irrelevant’ in the present political scenario in the country.
“ There is nothing to react on the statement as everyone knows about the status of the Congress in the country in the present situation,” he said.
Talking here, Mr Karat who is was in the state capital to attend the state executive meeting of the party, said people still repented why they had not supported the Left parties in the elections in the context of largescale corruption and inflation in the country.
“ In the context of Tripura assembly elections, Left Front will regain power with two-third majority and will continue to rule there,” he further claimed.
Earlier during series of assembly election meetings in Tripura, Mr Gandhi appealed to the youths to support the Congress as Left Front had become outdated. The Left Front government is ruling in Tripura for the past over two decades.
Meanwhile, to a question, Mr Karat said that Left Front always tried to unite the non-Congress and non-BJP political parties over the people’s issue.
“So when Mulayam Singh Yadav or other parties joined us against the government over certain issues should not be seen as that Left Parties are supporting these parties for their own vested interests,” he said.
The CPI(M) leader further said the party was trying to spread its tentacles in Uttar Pradesh by increasing its cadre base.” when we have enough support, then only the party will think of going to elections in a big way,” he said.
Demanding a high level probe into the corruption and embezzlement in relation to alleged bribes given to the officials in the country for purchasing 12 Agusta Westland helicopters in 2012, Mr Karat said the Indian government should not wait for a moment to order a probe when the Italian police have arrested the chief executive of aerospace and defence giant Finmeccanica for the payoff.
The CPI(M) leader also demanded an immediate removal of P J Kurien, deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha before the start of the budget session of Parliament. ‘ Kurien should be immediately removed from the post otherwise the Left Parties would stage demonstration in Parliament,’ he said.
The Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, has been accused by a rape survivor in Kerala of assaulting her when she was a school girl. In 1996 Suryanelli rape case, the victim says 42 men raped her in 40 days; though the Supreme Court has exonerated Mr Kurien, she says he was among her attackers.
Reacting sharply on the allegation of CBI prosecuter conniving with the 2G scam accused, Mr Karat said a thorough probe should also be done to punish the guilty. (UNI)
