JU Golden Jubilee celebrations begin with ‘Jashn-e-Gulzar’

JAMMU, Mar 12: The Golden Jubilee celebration of Jammu University today began with “Jashn-e-Gulzar” inaugural ceremony, witnessing participation of renowned lyricist, poet and film maker Gulzar along with some other world famous Indian writers and poets.
Advisor to the Governor, Khurshid Ahmed Ganai, along with Gulzar, inaugurated the three day high profile cultural event, organized by the Department of Urdu and Dean Student Welfare, JU, as part of celebrations of the University, which will continue for the entire year.
On the occasion, Gulzar enthralled the audience by rendering some of his famous poems in his unique and imitable style. Through his eloquent poems, Gulzar also highlighted present scenario in the country. On listening to the ‘Kul-Geet’ (the song of Jammu University), he expressed his desire to learn Dogri so that he could also write in Dogri as well as it sounds musical and is a sweet language.
Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, in his presidential address, recalled his interactions with Gulzar in the past and expressed satisfaction that he has no doubt that Urdu language will flourish after seeing the response of audience to various Urdu poets in general and Gulzar in particular.

Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice-Chancellor JU, in his welcome address, asserted that Jashn-e-Gulzar is the most befitting milestone which University of Jammu has achieved while celebrating the Golden Jubilee. He termed Gulzar as the Wordsmith of India.
Earlier Dr Taqi Abedi read the bio-brief of Gulzar and also recited some of his poems. On this occasion, books written by Dr Shahnaz Qadri on the life and works of Gopichand Narang and Dr Teqi Abedi on the works of Gulzar were also released. Prof Shohab Inayat Malik, HoD Urdu, presented brief synopsis of the both the books.
Another major attraction of the programme was the Urdu ‘Mushaira’ in which Gulzar and other poets entertained the audience by their poetry. The students of JU also presented a cultural program depicting the culture of J&K.
Later, Sham-e-Ghazal was also organized in which renowned Ghazal singers Dharmesh Magotra and Jeevan Sharma of the State presented Ghazals of Gulzar. Prof Shalendra Singh Jamwal, Dean Students Welfare, JU, presented vote of thanks. The event was conducted by Dr Mohd Riyaz.
Besides former Vice-Chancellors of JU, Prof Y R Malhotra, Prof R R Sharma, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Deans, Directors, Officers, staff, scholars, students and members of the civil society were also present on the occasion.
