Fruit growers’ concern over supply of spurious pesticides

SRINAGAR, Mar 13: The fruit growers in Kashmir have expressed serious concern over the supply of spurious pesticides to the orchardists in Valley and alleged the same lacks the control of the Government.
The issue was brought in the notice of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) representatives by a group of fruit growers during their meeting at Butwani Ganderbal today and they demanded that the efforts be made on the war footing basis to provide in time fertilizers to farmers and fruit growers besides ensuring the quality and approved supply of pesticides.
The fruit growers led by Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani a trade unionist said the KVK should pay attention to this main problem of the farmers and urged that the Government should have full control on supply of pesticides and fertilizers,. He said the fertilizers are also not made available to farmers in time which is cause of their worry as delaying the laying the fertilizers affects the production of fruit as well as other crops.
He also demanded that a mechanism be created for soil testing in the villages so that the farmers in advance be intimated which land is suitable for what production. He said the farmers are backbone of the country and Government should provide all basic facilities to them so that they don’t fall in the trap of middlemen. The Government should provide loan facilities through banks to them on nominal interest rate and later purchase the produce from farmers to boost their economy. This will save the farmers throughout the country from committing suicide, he added.
