WASHINGTON, May 1: US Special Representative Brian Hook is at the United Nations this week to update officials on the United States’ policy on Iran, the Department of State said in a press release.
“Special Representative for Iran and Senior Advisor to the Secretary Brian Hook is traveling to New York City April 30 to May 1, 2019, for meetings with Permanent Representatives of the United Nations Security Council,” the release said on Tuesday. “Special Representative Hook will provide council members with an update on the Administration’s Iran policy.”
On Monday, the US government announced that it would not renew waivers for eight Iranian oil importers that are valid through May 1. This move comes in the context of Washington’s intention to eventually make all countries cut their oil imports from Iran to zero, which is likely to significantly damage the Iranian economy.
The release said that Hook will discuss holding Iran accountable for defying UN Security Council resolutions aimed at regulating its development and testing of ballistic missiles.
Hook will also urge the need to fully implement all UN Security Council resolutions related to Iran such as the enforcement of the world body’s legally binding travel restrictions and arms embargoes, the release said.
US President Donald Trump announced last May that Washington would quit the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), otherwise known as the Iran nuclear deal. Sanctions against Iran, previously lifted under the agreement, were subsequently reimposed.
