JAMMU, July 10: The faculty of University of Jammu, namely Dr Sanjay Gupta, Dr Seema Rohmetra, Dr Monica Narang and Dr Raj Sandhu have become the founding members of Asian Association of Law Professors with its focus on inter disciplinary research and issues of governance.
The Association got formally launched during the International Conference on “Realising Asian Century: Understanding International Law & Governance” at Kathmandu, Nepal, wherein the JU faculty from Department of Law and The Law School made different presentations.
Dr Raj Sandhu from the Department of Law presented a paper entitled “B & R Initiative And India”. He discussed the various benefits, objections and possible solutions to address Indian objection. Dr Monica Narang presented a paper entitled “Human Rights in International Law: Issues and challenges in South Asian Countries” wherein she provided an over view of the same.
Dr Seema Rohmetra made a presentation on “Relevance of Gandhian Model of Governance”, wherein she provided a Gandhian critique of the contemporary models and dealt with the Gandhian model as the only alternative for sustainable development & governance.
The conference was first of its kind being conducted by the Asian Association of Law Professors (AALP) & Kathmandu School of Law. The broader themes of the conference included ‘International Law and Development’, ‘Geo Politics to Geo Economics- Asian Perspective’, ‘Is there any Asian Model of Governance ‘and ‘Tackling Climate Change in Asia’.
The conference formally launched AALP as a consortium of law institutions and professors from around the world connected with Asia. It brought together institutions, scholars, experts, researchers, young academicians and students by creating a thought-provoking experience for intellectual opportunity, stimulation and exchange. Prof Yubraj Sangroula, former Attorney General of Nepal and Executive Director Kathmandu School of law, was elected as President AALP. Prof Mizanur Rahman, former Chairman NHRC, Bangladesh, became the Executive Advisor for the Association. Nearly hundred delegates attended the conference from different parts of the world, including India, China, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Bhutan.
