Tributes paid to martyred students of 1966 agitation

5 JJSF activists sit on fast for three days

JAMMU, Oct 16: Various students’ organizations paid tributes to martyred students of 1966 agitation namely Gursharan Singh, Brij Mohan, Gulshan Handa and Subash Chander at Shaheedi Sthal, outside GGM Science College, here today.

The activists of various students’ organizations including Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Jammu Joint Students Forum (JJSF) and NSF paid tributes to the martyred students and also garlanding their statues at Shaheedi Sthal. They also mourned for a minute in their memory on the occasion.
While speaking, Sunil Chouhan, Provincial Vice President JJSF called upon the student fraternity to remain united and fight for the cause of Jammu region. “We should follow the path of those who fought for our cause and died in the police action. There is a need to remain united,” said Chouhan.
He added that these martyrs will always remain in our hearts as a biggest source of encouragement and these martyrs raising their voice against the discrimination with Jammu region and laid their lives for the sake of Jammu people.
Chouhan also praised the gallantry of martyrs who died for the right of students. He urged the student community to remain vigilant and be ready for sacrifices for the nationalistic cause to end the sufferings of student community of Jammu division.
Meanwhile, five activists of JJSF namely Dev Shubam, Arun Verma, Manav Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Prince Shah sat on a three-day fast as a mark of respect to martyred students of 1966 agitation.
It is pertinent to mention here that Brij Mohan, Gulshan Handa and Subash Chander were killed inside the GGM Science College premises while another student leader, Gurcharan Singh, was killed on October 18, 1966 in Jammu when a students’ procession was marching through the streets of Jammu to demand a University in the region.
