Jammu, Oct 25: Gandhi Global Family J&K in collaboration with Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and Regional & Urban Development Agency (RUDA) celebrated 74th United Nations Day at Lawrence Public School, here. The programme started with the lighting of the traditional lamp by Mr Prabhjot Sodhi, Head Circular Economy, UNDP India, Lt General (Rtd) Rakesh Sharma, Wg Cdr M M Joshi Chairman Lawrence Public School, Dr S P Varma Vice President Gandhi Global Family, Mrs Sunaina Sharma Secretary JMC and Mr Sanjeev Arora CEO RUDA.
Hundreds of students, staff members, representatives of JMC and GGF volunteers celebrated the day with huge enthusiasm. A special assembly was held where flags of 193 countries were represented by the students, holding their flags.
Dr S P Varma, Vice President, Gandhi Global Family expressed concern over environment and peace-building in Jammu & Kashmir. “Peace & Environment are collective responsibility of all. And we need responsible actions from all to mitigate such challenges.”, he added.
Prabhjot Sodhi, Head Circular Economy, UNDP, appreciated school for their active role in promoting Goal 8 of United Nations SDGs in Jammu. He also announced Lawrence Public School as one of the School partner in establishing UNDP collection centre.
Sunaina Sharma Secretary JMC shared her experience about working with various stakeholders in Jammu and also emphasised students to be ambassadors of managing plastic waste in their city and use plastic responsibly.
Sanjeev Arora, CEO RUDA, partner to UNDP India in implementing Plastic Waste Management Programme in Jammu, sensitised the gathering about plastic waste and it’s effect on environment.
The message of UN Secretary General was also read on the occasion by students Mitali Pandita & Ayesha Dar. Later, Shivani Joshi, Headmistress of the school presented vote of thanks.
