KARGIL, Dec 5: Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor (CEC), LAHDC, Kargil Feroz Ahmad Khan visited Zojila today to take stock of snow clearance operations on the Kargil-Srinagar road.
He was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner and CEO, LAHDC, Kargil Baseer ul Haq Choudhary, Superintendent of Police, Kargil, Dr Vinod Kumar, Commander 762 BRTF Vijayak K Mitra and members of the Ladakh Rescue Centre.
Incharge SDM Drass Muhammad Asgar, Executive Engineer Mechanical Division Kargil Om Prakash, SHO Drass, Incharge police post Minamarg and other concerned officers also accompanied the CEC during the tour.
The snow clearance team informed the CEC that clearance operations are presently underway in full swing from both Zero Point and Pani Matha on either sides of the Zojila Pass and subject to fair weather conditions, the highway is expected to be cleared by 7th of December. The team said that due to recurrent snow blizzards on the road stretch between Zero Point and India Gate of the Zojila axis, they are facing difficulties in snow clearance operations.
The CEC was further informed that clearance would be given to movement of vehicles once the road is made traffic-worthy and all out efforts are being made by the teams to ensure the road is thrown open for vehicular traffic at the earliest possible.
The CEC while appreciating the untiring efforts and commitment of the engineers, technicians, labourers and other man power of Project Vijayak, Project Beacon, Police Department, Mechanical Division and other concerned agencies for carrying out the snow clearance operations despite hostile weather conditions, urged them to continue with the same commitment so that the highway is made traffic worthy to ensure smooth passage of stranded passengers to their respective locations and the supply of required essential commodities to Ladakh is ensured.
Meanwhile, the CEC Kargil urged the Corps Commander 14 Corps, Lt General Harinder Singh to keep the Army location at Gumri stationed there till late winter in order to render necessary assistance to the snow clearance teams besides support to the Civil Administration in case of any possible exigencies.
