JAMMU, Mar 21: On the basis of their outstanding performances in the Cooch Behar Under-19 Cricket Tournament this season, two Jammu boys found berth in the Under-19 probables for Indian Under-19 team.
These cricketers included right-handed opening batsman Shubam Khajuria and right-arm speedster Rohit Sharma, who will be the part of the 30 probables selected for the coaching/conditioning camp to be held at National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bangalore from April 11, 2013 to April 20, 2013.
While Shubam Khajuria got the selectors’ nod for scoring three magnificent centuries and four half-centuries in the Cooch Behar Trophy during the current season, Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, scalped 31 wickets including three 5-wicket hauls in the seven Cooch Behar Trophy matches that he played this season.
Sharma’s best figures were 5/50 against formidable Gujarat at their home, while Shubam slammed thunderous 124 against Assam at Guwahati.
Meanwhile, with a 7-days break, after a ten days coaching camp at NCA, there will be a long duration coaching camp for three months at the same venue. During this prolonged coaching camp, India Under-19 team is expected to tour South Africa, England and New Zealand.
Splendid performances by these cricketers helped Jammu and Kashmir to qualify for the knock-out stage of the Cooch Behar Trophy, which simply was a landmark achievement, keeping in view the quality of the tournament and format of the fixture.
“The news of my selection in the India Under-19 probables brought an ecstatic feeling to me, my family and my coach,” said Rohit Sharma in a charming mood.
He attributed his success to his parents, especially his father, Krishan Dutt Sharma and his coach Virender Sharma, Sports Authority of India (SAI) cricket coach.
Meanwhile, when contacted Shubam Khajuria, who is in Haryana representing J&K Ranji Trophy team in Mushtaq Ali T20 Cricket Tournament said that it is an amazing rather blissful to know that I have been picked in the 30 Under-19 India probables.
While thanking his mom and father Pardeep Gupta and his coach Virender Sharma for his success, Shubam hoped that he will do well and find a place in the final 15-member squad.
