JAMMU, Dec 24: A seven day national workshop on ” Indian Scripts i.e. Brahmi, Sharada and Nastaliq”, organized by Department of Sanskrit in collaboration with Millennium Indian Education Foundation (MIEF), New Delhi, was today inaugurated by Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu.
In his inaugural address, Prof Dhar exhorted that various indigenous efforts ought to be formulated to ensure preservation of ancient languages which are on the verge of extinction and Universities have a greater role to play to ensure that through various platforms these precious and rare heritage is kept intact and propagated at right quarters.
The seven day workshop aims at reviving the dying script and training Sanskrit scholars and researchers that will help in translation of these rare scripts.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Ram Bahadur, HoD Sanskrit, was of the view that Sharada script should be translated into various languages so that more of knowledge can be extracted from these manuscripts.
Guest of honor Prof Ved Ghai said that the job undertaken by the Sanskrit Department is enormous and very significant for the civil society at large. Dean faculty of Arts, Prof Shohab Innayat Malik praised the Department for organsing activities of such magnitude. Vote of thanks was presented by Prof Sushma Devi, Coordinator “Indian Scripts: i.e. Brahmi, Sharada and Nastaliq.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Dr Suresh Abrol, Director Shashvat Art Gallery Jammu had placed different type of manuscripts in Sanskrit Department for the benefit of the students and scholars .
Among others, Deans, Directors, Ranjeet Kalra, scholars and students were also present on the occasion.
