JAMMU, Dec 27: In a significant decision, the Union Territory Government of Jammu and Kashmir today ordered holiday on October 26 on the occasion of Accession Day of the erstwhile State of J&K with rest of the country and deleted holidays observed on National Conference patriarch Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary and `Martyrs’ Day’ for the calendar year 2020.
List of the holidays was released by the Government of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir today.
This was the first list of holidays released by the J&K Government after erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.
Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary which falls on December 5 and `Martyrs’ Day’ on July 13 have been deleted from the list of holidays for the calendar year 2020, released today.
Quite significant was the inclusion of Accession Day as holiday on October 26.
However, Maharaja Hari Singh’s birth anniversary on September 23 hasn’t been declared a holiday though it was also a long pending demand of the people in Jammu region.
The Government has declared total of 27 holidays which will be observed across the Union Territory.
Eight holidays have been declared as local which will be observed in particular districts or tehsils.
Four holidays will be observed in Kashmir province only while three holidays will be observed in Jammu province only.
