Leopard cub shot dead by Police

REASI, Jan 3: In a shocking incident, a leopard cub was shot dead by Policemen when Wildlife officials were attempting to capture it.
More serious is the fact that a claw and teeth of the dead cub were found mysteriously separated when its body was formally handed over by the Police to Wildlife Department.
The incident took place in the late last night at Mahore Town when the leopard cub sneaked into partially abandoned building of old Sub-district hospital. Even as the team of Wildlife Department had reached the site and was on job for capturing the cub alive, an `extra alert’ cop opened AK-47 fire on the fleeing animal, which died on the spot.
Giving details, Block Officer (Wildlife Department), Mohd Mubarak told the Excelsior that a tranquillizer gun was used for incapacitating the leopard cub, which ran furiously thus panicking cops who opened fire in a pre-emptive move.
Admitting that a claw and teeth of the dead cub were separately handed over by the Mahore Police to Wildlife Department this morning, Mohd Mubarak said that only postmortem report can establish the cause of severance of the limbs.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner Reasi, Indu Chib said that she has sought incident report on the matter even as preliminary information says that opening fire on the cub was an act of defence.
