Shuttle coaches get professional training

HYDERABAD, Mar 23: It was a rare congregation of the finest of badminton brains and passion-driven promoters at the Pullela Gopichand Academy here today.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) and GoSports Foundation put in place a unique project-the intermediate-level coach training programme that is exclusively earmarked for 30 of the sport’s best contemporary coaches.

The seven-day course encompasses various aspects with the pearls of wisdom coming from accomplished Badminton World Federation technical expert Venugopal Mahalingam.

He said there was a vibrant badminton culture in India, which can be popularised further when the coaches get attuned to the latest techniques and evolve thoroughbred professionalism into the art.

Chief National coach Pullela Gopichand said that such an effort was long overdue. The Dronacharya awardee said he was happy that he was an integral part of the project.

According to T P S Puri, Vice-President, BAI, the coaches will be accredited by the Association following which they will be empowered to conduct national development programmes and national coaching camps across the nooks and corners.

Nandan Kamath, Managing Trustee of GoSports Foundation, said they had felt that such a measure was the need of the hour. He assured the Foundation’s continued support for the cause, particularly when the country is on a new high on the global circuit. (UNI)
