Pampore shuts against erratic power supply

Srinagar, Jan 17: A complete shutdown was observed today against erratic power supply in Pampore Town in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Nearly 300 people assembled inside the premises of Tehsil Officer Pampore and raised slogans in favor of their demands. They later held a detailed meeting regarding the issue with the concerned department. The locals dispersed peacefully after Tehsildar assured inquiry into the issue.
The locals said the area often reels under darkness as a 6.3 MV transformer of the receiving station, wherefrom the electricity is supplied to most parts of the town, develops technical snags every now and then.
“In last twenty days the transformer developed the fault twice. How can it happen with such consistency,” a local said. The locals called the protests after they smell a rat in the whole process. “There seems to be an unholy nexus between the officials and the repairing agency and fault is being created to benefit each other,” a local said, adding that the tainted officials earn a good amount of money with every technical snag.
The protestors said due to the insensitivity of the authorities they were forced to observe the shutdown. “We have repeatedly raised the issue with the concerned department but faced disappointments. We took the decision after exhausting all the measures,” another resident said, adding that they would intensify protests if Government fails to deliver this time.
The officials listen to the issues of the people and ordered an inquiry into the matter. “I have written to the concerned department and asked them to conduct a departmental inquiry. They were asked to submit a report within ten days. The action will be taken based on the report,” Ishtiyaq Ahmad, Tensildar Pampore told Excelsior.
