Protesting NYC volunteers being cane-charged at Dogra Chowk on Monday

JAMMU, Mar 25: Police today cane-charged National Youth Corps (NYC) volunteers, during a protest march towards Civil Secretariat, in which over dozen volunteers were injured and hospitalized.
Demanding regularization of their services, hundreds of NYCs including females from various districts of Jammu province, assembled in front of Press Club and raised slogans against the Government for not redressing their genuine demand of regularization.
The volunteers in the shape of rally started marching towards Civil Secretariat. But the heavy deployment of police restricted them near Dogra Chowk and resorted to lathicharge, in which over dozen volunteers were injured.
Some NYCs sat on road to lodge their protest and blocked the vehicular movement, leading to traffic snarls.
Addressing the gathering, Asif Ali Bhat, State vice president, National Youth Corps (NYC) Association, said that the Government is not paying any heed towards their demands, compelling them to adopt path of agitation.
He said 8000 NYCs were engaged with different Government departments and have rendered 2 years service and now the Government is implementing use and throw policy, which is not bearable at all.
Bhat further stated that the criminal silence of the Government on this issue will surely put the future of the 8000 NYCs in dark.
He demanded regularization of their services as they have experience of rural development, urban development, social welfare, education, tourism, etc.
“We have decided to march towards Delhi to put our demands before the Central Government for redressal”, Bhat added.
Among others who spoke were Syed Bakar Jafri, State general secretary, Jagdeep Singh Randhawa, accountant, Mushtaq Bhat, advisor, Abid Sheikh, spokesman, etc.
