SRINAGAR, Mar 14: The Srinagar-Leh National Highway is all set to be opened for the traffic after remaining closed for more than four months now.
The project Beacon of Border Roads has cleared the snow of its sector up to 108 kilometers at the Zojila a month ahead of schedule, throwing up all the possibilities for the early reopening of the National Highway connecting Ladakh region this season.
The Srinagar-Leh Highway was closed in the month of December last year due to heavy snowfall at Zojila top.
The BRO officials said that the snow clearance operation was started by the Project Beacon in February 21 by inducting additional equipment and manpower.
In just 18 days, the concerned force has managed to clear the area up to the zero point on the Zojila top. The entire Zojila is dotted with 25 avalanche-prone areas which record 15-30 feet snow accumulation.
”Our people worked 10-12 hours a day during these 18 working days to achieve the milestone by clearing the snow in the record time despite heavy snow accumulation in the sector,” Commanding Officer 32 BRTF Col Mukesh Kumar said.
He added that his team will not stop but will move towards Drass by clearing the snow till they meet the snow clearance team of Project Vijayak.
