Looking to the current lockdown in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir to fight the emerging crisis on account of the COVID-19, a major decision has been taken by the School Education Department by ordering mass promotion of all students up to class 9 and those appearing in class 11 examinations in Jammu division. As regards decision about classes 10th and 12th, sensitive by nature, the same is reported to be reviewed only after the type of situation emerging after April 14.
Since in the present era of competitions, even slight disruptions in the academic schedule and school attendance have their own telling effects on the prospects of the students vis-a-vis examinations, the ongoing lockdown of two weeks and ambiguity about its fate after April 14, must have prompted the authorities to take such an unprecedented decision. Similarly, those private students of class 11 in Kashmir Division and winter zone of Jammu division who had to appear in bi-annual exams in April, too have been given mass promotion. Six lakh students, thus, have been ‘benefitted’ and are eligible for admission in the next grade. However, this ‘relaxation’ may not find much favour with those numerous students who have it to emerge with top grades in exams and at some time in the near future, some screening and filtration process supplemented by extra coaching for the left out portion of the syllabus, must be mulled by the authorities.
