JAMMU, May 20: Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has opposed the Central Government’s move for suspension of labour laws and has criticized the latter for giving silent consent to state governments for unilaterally changing statuary provisions under different labour laws.
Addressing a press conference here today, Subhash Verma, J&K president of BMS, said that in a memorandum to President of India through districts administration, they have warned the Central Government to desist from changing labour laws, stating that a number of states has enhanced daily duty hours from 8 to 12 hours in violation of ILO 47 convention and Factory Act passed by the Indian Parliament and further this will discourage female workers in employment and will affect the health of the workers.
Verma asked the Government to make it clear as on what basis the Centre has given silent to the state governments to change labour laws unilaterally. The Sangh can’t digest the ideas of state governments that workers are road blockers of development and demanded the state governments to convince the country how workers are hurdle in the way of development, he added.
General secretary, Ashok Choudhary, said that there is huge difference of earning from top to bottom and industrialist are making profits in crores even in the present existing regime and if labour laws will be diluted and free hand will be given to employers, poor workers will be exploited and disparity will be increased.
Choudhary demanded immediate withdrawal of freezing of labour laws as well as enhanced working hours by some states. He also demanded preparation of National Register of Migrant Workers and appealed the President of India to desist from giving assent to the ordinances, failing which, he said a nation vide agitation will be started by the BMS against the Government’s anti-poor policies.
