Pol Science, Commerce Deptts crush opponents; advance to quarterfinals

JAMMU, Apr 12: Political Science and Commerce Departments crushed their opponents in their respective matches and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the cricket event, being organised during the ongoing Inter-Department Tournament (Men) by Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu at Varsity ground, here today.
In the first match of the day, Political Science Department thrashed Physics and Electronics Department and sailed into the quarterfinal round.
Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Political Science Department scored a huge target of 153 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in allotted 20 overs. Sajad Malik played well, chipped in some crispy shots in his 55 runs contribution including seven balls towards the fence, while Abdul Qayoom, Rayees Ahmed and Shakeel Ahmed contributed 30, 25 and 17 runs respectively.
For Physics and Electronics Department side, Nitin and Narotam scalped 2 wickets each, while Deepak and Kanil took one wicket apiece.
While batting, Physics and Electronics Department failed to chase the target and bundled out at 120 runs for the loss or 8 wickets in stipulated 20 overs. Sonam was the top scorer with 42 runs including four boundaries, while Mukesh scored 20 runs.
For Political Science Department, Rayees was the pick of the bowler with 4 wickets, while Shakeel Ahmed claimed 2 wickets. Sanjay and Narinder scalped one wicket each.
In the second match, Commerce Department registered 37 runs win over Environmental Science Department and advanced to the quarterfinal stage of the tournament.
Batting first, after winning the toss, Commerce Department scored 157 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in allotted 20 overs. Satwinder Singh scored 36 runs including six fours, while Dilawar Singh chipped in 33 runs with the help of six boundaries. Shabir and Sunil Kumar scored 19 and 15 runs respectively.
For Environmental Science Department side, Arvind was the wrecker-in-chief, who scalped 4 wickets, while Ranjan claimed 2 wickets. Pankaj, Arun and Shahzad took one wicket apiece.
In the second inning, Environmental Science Department bundled out at 120 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in stipulated 20 overs and thus lost the match by 37 runs. Arun was the top scorer with 30 runs including three balls towards the fence, while Arvind and Ravinder scored 18 and 12 runs respectively.
For Commernce Department, Nikhil and Shabir proved their worth and claimed 2 wickets each, while Anil took one wicket.
The matches were officiated by Vijay Dogra, Jagtar Singh, Pankaj Sasan and Ajit Kumar as umpires, while Sat Pal maintained the scorecards.
The tournament is being organised under the supervision of Prof Dhian Singh Bhau, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu.
