Inter Battalion tournament from Apr 15; Run for Fun on Apr 21: Sahai

JAMMU, Apr 12: Jammu and Kashmir Police is organizing Annual Inter Battalion tournament from April 15 and third “Run for Fun” on April 21.
This was stated by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Armed, SM Sahai during a press conference, here this afternoon.
He added that the six-day-long tournament will witness as many as 1200 athletes, including 300 women, from 28 battalions of J&K Armed Police and Indian Reserve Police (IRP) and will contest in 13 different disciplines.
While Basketball, Volleyball, Tug-of-War, Boxing, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Football, Handball and Kabaddi will be held at Police sports complex, Hockey and Athletics events will be conducted at Jammu University grounds.
Shooting events will be held at Training Center Sunjwan and Handball will be organised at District Police Lines (DPL), while Swimming will be held at KC Public School, ADGP added.
Apart from the above mentioned disciplines, the tournament will also feature Gazetted Officers events, which include Badminton, Table Tennis and Lawn Tennis apart from Shooting, he said, adding, that the all the matches will be played on knock-out basis.
He said that the tournament will act as a precursor to the Inter Zone Sports meet scheduled later this year.
ADGP said that after the conclusion of the Inter Battalion tournament an outstanding contingent of sportsmen of different battalions will be selected to represent the Armed Zone in the Inter Zone Sports meet.
He further said that the opening ceremony of the tournament will be held at Police Stadium Gulshan Ground at 17:30 hours.
Sahai further added the “Run for Fun” marathon, which will feature a 4km run, half marathon and marathon events, besides a 12km run for boys and girls below the age of 17 years, will be held here on April 21 at 5:30 am from police stadium, gulshan ground.
He added that the prize purse for this year’s marathon events has been increased to Rs 3 lakh from previous year’s Rs 90,000.
While the top athlete in the Marathon will get a sum of Rs 25,000, the winner in the half-marathon will fetch an amount of Rs 10,000.
The winner in the 12km race will get a sum of Rs 8,000.
ADGP added that the athletes from the paramilitary forces and J&K Police who secure first five positions in marathon and half-marathon will be awarded Commendation Certificate with suitable cash award.
Among others present were IGP Armed RP Manhas, DIG Johny Williams, Commandants of Jammu based IRP and Armed battalions.
