Jhelum houseboat owners seek Govt’s help

SRINAGAR, July 16: River Jhelum Houseboat Owners Association today demanded rehabilitation of houseboat owners in river Jhelum and the repairing of those houseboats that have sustained damages

Ghulam Qadir Gasi, Convenor, River Jhelum Houseboat Owners Association Convenor held a silent protest along with the few children in the Press Colony here urging the Government to initiate repairs of the damaged houseboats and rehabilitating those who are in dire need.
He said that they have been demanding this for the so many years and that they have been ignored by the administration.
He said that now the situation has turned ugly as the houseboats they are residing in are in need of immediate repairs.
“That needs to be done and we don’t have money for that-we are not financially that sound that we could take up the repairs,” he said.
He said that the Government is well aware of the risk that our families are facing due to the damage that our houseboats have sustained. “We fail to understand why they aren’t taking any steps towards our betterment,” he said.
There are around 86 such houseboats that need repairs and few more are in a need of rehabilitation.
The River Jhelum Houseboat Owners Association has appealed to the LG GC Murmu and other concerned officials to take note of the matter and take measures for the repairs of the houseboats and rehabilitation of some houseboat owners.
