Abysmal performance

Abysmal 10th class results in most of the Government Schools in urban areas are linked to political resourcefulness of the teachers involved. Those school teachers who can manage their posting within the Jammu Municipal Corporation limits or other district headquarters have shown 0-5 per cent results in annual 10th class examination. This is a very sad commentary on the deteriorating standards of school education. Sadly Jammu region has shown far greater downslide of standards than other parts of the State. This is despite tall claims of the Education Department that it is maintaining strict supervision of the performance of teaching staff in schools.

First of all, the malaise lies in politicizing education and rampant nepotism under which favourites are given plum postings and then on the basis of political clout which the blue eyed teachers enjoy, they take the liberty of whiling away their time instead of performing their duty to the satisfaction of the students. Secondly, lack of proper supervision and accountability on all levels has also contributed to the downslide of standards. Another important factor is that nobody in the Education Department takes the initiative to fill thousands of vacancies at various levels like lecturer, Masters and Masters under RMSA. We have vacancies but the schools are starving for want of adequate manpower. How can this situation improve unless the schools have adequate teaching staff? Education Department has to do some introspection before there is further lowering of educational standards.
